A product concept by Lindsey Pickett marries form and function by creating a pendant that doubles as a camera and locket. It’s really quite beautiful and I hope that it some day goes into production.
On a side note, my semester is OVER! Yeah, for me! Three down, one to go.

This has been circulating on the web, but I thought I’d do a quick post anyway. Nikon’s Universcale is an interactive visualization that presents the abstract idea of scale as it relates to the universe. While noting that it is no simple task, the website does pair visual representations of scale with textual descriptions. My only grievance is the application disables scrolling in the browser window, which for smaller resolution monitors, causes the main functionality / navigation to be lost "below the fold." So much for considering the scales of screen resolution.
This reminds me of a post I did a while back on some other visualizations dealing with another abstract concept, time.

A recurring theme this semester is designing graphical representations of projects. Whether it’s a Gantt chart projecting time span and allocation for a disaster preparedness project, a user hierarchical chart for a Ruby on Rails program, or a wireframe for a new website design, I am surrounded by pretty visualizations of pending products.
A recent post on 37signals.com caught my eye as the quintessential task-goal graphic. It’s instructions for preparing pancakes - all done with graphics - and without a single word. It’s complete, accurate, and entirely usable (well almost, it could use a little tweaking, but overall it’s pretty cool.) Just imagine how far reaching it’s audience is - if only this level of thoughtful design was applied to more products and procedures.

A gorgeous prototype for a three-dimensional camera debuted at Photokina 2006 by Olympus. It is made of Japanese Evergreen wood, the same used for building Shinto shrines.
